For those curious minds who want to know about the past history this information on Agra will definitely satisfy your curiosity. The city has strong historical background which is evident from the numerous historical monuments in and around the city. The history of Agra dates back to the time of Mahabharata where it is referred to as Agravana.

You will be amazed to know, that it has been called Arya Griha or the Abode of Aryans It was Ptolemy who gave this place a modern name called Agra. The rich heritage of Agra city is contributed by the rulers of different dynasties. Among the many rulers the credit of laying the foundation stone of modern Agra goes to the ruler of Delhi Sultanate, Sikandar Lodhi. Later the Mughal emperor Babur spent some of his time and also introduced the concept of square Persian-styled gardens in Agra.

The emperor Akbar constructed his own city Fatehpur Sikri near Agra and also built an Agra Fort here. The next king Jahangir made this city more beautiful with the addition of panoramic gardens and palaces. But the credit of making this city recognized by the whole world goes to Shahjahan who built the Taj Mahal, a master piece of Mughal Architecture, which stands proudly as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Unfortunately Shahjahan was dethroned and imprisoned by his own son Aurangzeb. After Aurangzeb the glory of Mughal faded and rulers other than Mughals came into the picture like Marathas, Jats and finally the Britishers.
